Support can make a difference.
Psychotherapy for parents raising children with disabilities.
This is not what you imagined.
When you planned to have a family, you probably did not imagine that you would become a parent to a child with disabilities, but it is a reality, as unfair as it may be.
Feelings of grief, anger, guilt, fear and many other reactions are understandable when a child receives a disability diagnosis. These emotions need to be recognized, using a supportive and nonjudgemental process. Even after doing this emotional work, parents may still need help with these feelings as they re-erupt at key developmental moments.
No one wants to be stuck. Life still has to happen for you, your child and the rest of the family.
Just as it is necessary to understand life’s emotional impact, it is equally important to imagine how life can move forward. There is always room to grow — for each of us.
Every parenting journey is unique and some are harder than others. But growth is always possible.
How can parents teach their children to be their best when they themselves are struggling?
Unfortunately, it is up to the individual parent to manage behaviors, chase diagnoses and therapies for your child, advocate for education and inclusion, learn bureaucratic systems and plan for the future. And that’s all without mentioning laundry, cooking, siblings, adult relationships and careers.
In the midst of so much chaos, how can you feel organized and effective instead of bogged down emotionally? How do you model perseverence to a child who must also learn to cope with challenges?
Are you tired of being tired from the constant strategizing and thinking necessary to survive a day?
Do you have a time and place to acknowledge your emotional load?
Do you wish someone understood how hard it is have a child with a disability?
